Trash & Recycling
Campbell County Public Works does not have a trash service/pickup. They have eight sites that residents can deposit bagged household waste for free. The closest one is Livestock Road Transfer Site (behind McDonalds). You must provide valid proof of residency: ID, utility bill, or deed, etc.

Most Russell Springs residents use private companies for pickup -
mainly GFL for their trash pickup and recycling. If you use or hear of “County Waste”, it is now called GFL . County Waste (GFL) billing will be through exclusively GFL as of April 1, 2022. If you previously had an account with County Waste to pay your bill online, your account has been migrated to GFL. GFL states that it depends on the address, not the neighborhood, when your trash pickup is scheduled. (due to the trash truck “arm” being on the right side. They plan their “routes” due to what side of the street the house is located.
Ex: Trash: Early Monday morning
Recycling: Thursday morning-afternoon Residents have shared that GFL costs $28 a month for trash and recycling.
Trash: $23 Recycling: $5 - GFL Environmental Phone: 434-528-5540 (be patient - sometimes can be on hold for a few minutes)

Rummage Sale - Spring/Fall
Officially, the 100 Mile Yard Sale Route 29 Virginia is planned for 1st week/weekend of May.
(Liberty University’s commencement , Proms, Mother’s Day)
Russell Springs usually follows the 100 Mile Yard Sale schedule. (4 days) This is planned (USUALLY) for the first weekend in May and the first weekend in October. In the past and scheduling conflicts, the neighborhood has planned for a Saturday in April and/or Mother’s Day weekend and also the last Saturday in September. Weather and other events could push it into October.
Halloween & Trick or Treating
Hundreds of trick or treaters visit Russell Springs. Residents have remarked that they gave out 600-1,000 pieces of candy. People will park at the church around the corner and walk down English Tavern Road (no sidewalks) and then embark through the neighborhood. Many will drive through and/or park inside the neighborhood to walk up Russell Springs.
There is no rule or stated procedure for them. There are many children who come through the neighborhood of all ages. Residents and treaters are always encouraged to be aware of each other, respectful, careful, kind, and understanding. The treaters may be in groups or with guardians. Many guardians have strollers. Residents have also noted that there is a beginning and ending time that the city promotes for trick or treating, but treaters may come before or will come after the stop time. Posted hours through the city varies between 5 pm - 7 pm.
Overall, it is an exciting and joyful time for those that love this season and event. For others, it is a frustrating and truly anxious time for being stuck in traffic on English Tavern Rd. and not being to get in or out of the neighborhood, especially in an emergency.
Christmas & Decorations - Community
Russell Springs has been known in the community to be one of the places to ride through and tour during Christmas to see all of the beautiful decorations.
It’s up to each resident what they want to do. Although there are a lot of holidays and observances to celebrate with decorations, Russell Springs has been listed online in the past as one of the subdivisions to visit for Christmas.
Christmas and decor-enthusiasts (especially children) love to see the lights, so there may be slower vehicles traveling through to enjoy the decorations. Be prepared for a little more traffic in Russell Springs during the holiday in the evenings.
Legacy Wealth Management Group (English Tavern Rd) usually hosts a beautiful (free) Christmas event with a drive-through for decorations, food drive, donuts, cider, Santa Claus, Grinch, etc. for the community. There will be a lot of traffic during their event in the evenings up and down English Tavern Rd. during December.

Backyard Hens = Free Eggs
Before the pandemic, approximately 8% of Americans were estimated to have their own chicken coop. This is about 10 million households. Sounds like a lot of chickens and definitely millions of eggs. This was around 2018. When people bravely ventured out for groceries, the bread, milk, flour, yeast, and eggs were limited or gone. The culture of having your own chickens makes sense because the pandemic caused a lot of people to discover how to be self-sufficient, especially when they were unable to leave their homes to shop in public grocery stores.
Owning a chicken coop helps individuals have a sense of responsibility and can also help children and youth to learn how to take care of a pet while relying less on grocery stores. How many households currently have chicken coops in 2022? The numbers are still soaring. Although those 10 million households were not new to the culture of building sustainability, we currently see families building their own chicken coops along with a lush vegetable garden.
Are you thinking of having your own chicken coop? There are several reasons on why you should research and plan to have your backyard chickens. The most obvious is to have free, fresh eggs within your reach and have hands-on experience with sustainability while saving money. If you allow them to occasionally roam, they can help with eating bugs such as ticks and provide fertilizer for your lawn! You can find over 100 listings of chicken coops on Amazon and those are still growing!
There are many guides online to build a chicken coop so if you’re planning, browse YouTube to find out where you should start while considering your budget. The national average cost of starting a chicken coop ranges from $100 to $4,000. (Fixr.com) How elaborate would you want the coop? That is up to you! But if you start with the essentials, over time, you could save yourself money and the hassle of running out of eggs!
Living in Russell Springs is a wonderful experience when you are creating your own dream home and comfy yard. There are no HOA rules and ordinances. The only code you need to know is the Campbell County, VA zoning ordinance. Many may be asking if Russell Springs “allows” chickens. The answer is a resounding, YES! Start planning your rooster-less coop with 10 or fewer hens now and let your neighbors know if you have any extra eggs to share or for sale!
